Activity Description
Explore the presence of the Jewish community in Athens. Learn through the rich historical narrative and visit places of significance for the local Jewish community’s life and history
This tour focuses on the presence and activity of the Jewish community in Athens, dating back to the 4th century B.C.E. Apart from learning through the rich historical narrative, you will also have the opportunity to visit places of significance which have been linked to the local Jewish community’s life and history.
Notable examples are the famous Monastiraki area, housing the flea market, and nearby Thission where Synagogues ‘Beth Shalom’ and ‘Etz Hayyim’ are to be found. Another important location is the Ancient Agora, the place that bears the first traces of a Jewish Synagogue. Furthermore there is the Athens Jewish Museum which was founded in 1977 in order to preserve and exhibit the painstakingly collected material evidence of 2,300 years of Jewish life in Greece, as well as other monuments and places of interest around the city center.
