Hiking at the Gorge of Agali, Evia (Transfer from Athens)
Activity Description
Come and discover the hidden beauties of Evia and cross one of the most beautiful hiking gorges in Greece, the wonderful Gorge of Agali, at the foot of Dirfi! The Gorge of Agali is an excellent choice even for those who are taking their first steps in the mountains and is sure to impress you thanks to its special and rich ecosystem!
A few words about the gorge of Agali
It is one of the most beautiful gorges of Evia, which rises to the top of Dirfi, passing through many, small but remarkable habitats. Its length reaches 6 km, while the rich vegetation is typical, which includes: Aleppo pines, shrubs (holly, oregano, thyme, rosemary, etc.), hundred-old plane trees, linden, rowan, sorghum, oak, maple, maple, maple flowers. At the highest, a Kefalonian fir forest begins.
The longest part of the gorge is crossed by a stream which forms beautiful lakes and waterfalls. This stream originates from the springs Arkoudovrisi and Kriovrisi, in the gorge, which are the main sources of the river Messapi.
The name "Agali", as the locals say, comes from "agali" as in the many narrow and uphill places, the walkers are obliged to walk slowly.
Our route
Our hike starts from the village of Agios Athanasios. The route through the gorge is uphill. We cross the river from the metal bridges that have replaced the old wooden ones. In less than half an hour of walking from the entrance, the gorge narrows and towering impressive rocks rise next to us. We continue to our first stop at the Kriovrysi spring, a beautiful stone fountain with gurgling water awaits us! Then, the landscape changes and the towering plane trees give way first to pines and then to firs. We cross slopes and sub-alpine meadows and reach our destination, the Kratia spring, at 730 meters altitude, with the characteristic giant plane tree. Our return is via the same path.
