Samaria Gorge Hiking Tour
Activity Description
Samaria Gorge: Greece's Premier Natural Wonder
Discover the Samaria Gorge, Greece's most captivating gorge and Europe's longest. Nestled in Crete's Chania region, this natural marvel beckons nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike. Whether you're an avid hiker or prefer the "lazy way" from the southern entrance at Agia Roumeli, the Samaria Gorge promises an unforgettable experience.
Located on Crete's southwest side, the gorge is carved by a river flowing between the majestic White Mountains (Lefká Óri) and Mt. Volakias. While it's often cited as 18 km in length, the true distance from the Omalos plateau to Agia Roumeli is 16 km. The trek through the Samaria National Park spans 13 km, with an additional 2 km leading to Agia Roumeli, totaling a 15 km hike.
The gorge's iconic section, the Gates (sometimes referred to as "Iron Gates"), showcases towering cliffs narrowing to a mere four meters, reaching heights of nearly 300 meters (980 feet). Established as a national park in 1962, it serves as a sanctuary for the endangered kri-kri (Cretan goat), along with other endemic species, vibrant flowers, and diverse birdlife.
The historic village of Samariá, named after the ancient church, Óssia María, once thrived within the gorge. It was vacated in 1962 to pave the way for the national park. A quintessential Crete experience involves trekking from the Omalos plateau to the Libyan Sea at Agia Roumeli. From there, travelers can sail to Sougia or Chora Sfakion for an overnight stay or a return trip to Chania. This 5-7 hour hike, though rewarding, can be challenging, especially during summer's peak.
Embark on a journey through Crete's crown jewel, the Samaria Gorge, and immerse yourself in its unparalleled natural beauty.
