Hiking on the alpine paths – Vardousia Mountains 12-13/10
Activity Description
The program starts on Saturday morning when we will leave Athens for Athanasios Diakos.
There, just outside the village, we will park our vehicles and start the hike.
The first destination is the shelter of EOS Amfissa.
The path initially climbs steeply through the forest until it finds the dirt road that goes up to the shelter. With our movement taking place both on a path and on a dirt road, we get to the top of a ridge and can see the shelter higher up. Following the ridge we will reach the shelter.
There we will set up our tents (which we will have sent with the company car) and rest.
Sunday morning will find us at 1915 meters altitude.
We will get ready and start our ascent to one of the most beautiful peaks in Greece, Korakas.
The trail is marked, and at first it climbs gently, gradually gaining altitude.
But then the situation will change and now we are going uphill in an easterly direction. The long slope is broken by successive uphill traverses in a field of sara in several places, we will need to have our attention and in some places the assistance with the hands is also required.
We will reach the small gully that leads us to Portes, the entrance to the ridge and we will gently descend to the plateau a little lower called Megas Kampos.
In a short time we will reach the peak of Korakas which can be seen in the southeast.
Our return will be by the same path with an intermediate stop for rest at the shelter.
Upon completion of the activity we will go to a picturesque tavern in the area to taste the local cuisine.

Vardousia is a mountain complex that includes the southernmost tip of Pindos in Central Greece. It rises in the northwest of Fokida, and is the second highest mountain of Roumeli after Giona, with a height of 2,495 meters (Korakas peak).
Vardousia consists of three groups of peaks, the northern, the western and the southern. The northern complex is characterized by smooth peaks, the western one presents many steep and independent peaks, while the southern one, which is also the highest, forms a steep and long ridge. It is one of the few mountain ranges in Greece that have an alpine character. The mountain range is defined by the rivers Morno, Evinos and Kokkinototamos and has a rich flora. A large part of its surface is covered by fir, oak and cedar forests.
