Hiking and climbing in Meteora
Activity Description
Meteora, literally meaning "suspended in the air", is a formation of immense monolithic pillars and hills-like huge rounded boulders which dominate the local area.
It is also associated with one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece.
The six monasteries are built on natural conglomerate pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly, near the Pineios river and the famous Pindus Mountain range.Climbing Meteora and walking the same old paths the ascetic monks used to follow, will be a breathtaking experience.
We meet our guide in the parking of your hotel and with our mini bus we arrive to Kastraki. (2 hours driving) From there we take all our climbing equipment and after a 5 min walk, we arrive in the famous Doupiani Rock. With an amazing view, we start for the first few minutes talking about our equipment, skills and of course our safety. On the rocks we try a multi pitch route, that leads us to the top, where we have time to enjoy the view and take some pictures, before we start our rappelling back to the base. We collect our equipment, discuss about our experience and organize our next one.
Don’t forget to pay a visit to two of the most important monasteries of Meteora: Megalo Meteoro and Varlaam.
