Explore Nestos Delta - Lake Vistonida
Activity Description
The Delta of Nestos is considered to be one of the most important wetlands, not only in Greece, but in Europe as well, and part of it is protected under the Ramsar Convention. It is also included in the NATURA 2000 Network of protected areas and it is part of the East Macedonia and Thrace National Park. It is comprised of a complex of habitats with lagoons, wetlands, reeds and the riverside forest of Kotza-Orman. The brackish waters of the lagoon, which are shallow and rich in nutrients, are ideal for fish farming.
The hydro-biotope of Lake Vistonida and Porto Lagos is as diverse as very few others. The northern and southern banks of the lake are surrounded by reeds, clusters of tamarisk, riverside forests, and wetlands. The 21-37 fish species that have been recorded in the lagoon attract-depending on the season- around 300 bird species, including Little Egrets, Flamingos, Pelicans, Pygmy Cormorants, Great Egrets, as well as some particularly rare species such as the White-tailed Eagle, the White-headed Duck and the Lesser White-fronted Goose.

Itinerary
You will meet our guides at the village of Toxotes, from where we head south following the eastern bank towards the sea. The renowned “Megalo Dasos” (which means “Great Forest”) which surrounds the river is awe-inspiring to those who wish to explore one of the last remaining wildlife refuges. Then we have a short coffee break and perhaps a swim overlooking the island of Thassos. After that, we get on the vehicles and head towards Porto Lagos and the St.Nicolas monastery, which is built on an islet in the lagoon. Our tour continues on the west side of Lake Vistonida before we finally head back to Xanthi and Toxotes.
