Itinerary

During your half day tour we will visit the Acropolis Hill and the surrounding monuments like Propylea, the Temple of Athena Nike, Erehtheion, Karyatides and The Parthenon. Afterwards we will drive to Mount Lycabettus, the highest point of Athens and then to the Panathinaic Stadium, the first stadium of the first Modern Olympic games. Driving down to the Presidental Palace, the Megaro Maximou, the Hellenic parliament, the National Technical University of Athens and a drive through the narrow streets of Plaka full of charming homes. We will visit the Temple of Zeus, the biggest temple ever built in Athens and the Athens National Arhaeological museum. Then we will drive to the Monastery of Daphni, which is protected by UNESCO and was built in the Byzantine period. And lastly we will go to a local restaurant for a meal, which I will provide.

The Daphni Monastery was founded towards the end of the sixth century A.D. on the site of the Sanctuary of Apollo which had been desecrated by the Goths in 395. The Sanctuary of Apollo was built in the Ionic style using the thinnest and smallest columns. The columns stand on a base with an ornamental scroll at the top. A few of the columns of the temple have been preserved. One of the four Ionic columns of the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo remains at the site, as it was re-used in the Daphni Monastery. The other columns were removed and taken to London by Thomas Bruce, Earl of Elgin (of Elgin Marbles fame). The columns, column bass, and column tops from the Sanctuary of Apollo are currently in the possession of the British Museum.
