6-day excursion with hiking and accommodation in Karpathos

Day 1: Arrival at Karpathos airport and transfer to Diafani

Upon arrival at Karpathos airport, transfer to the charming seaside village of Diafani. Settle into your room and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings.

Day 2: Trekking to Mount Olympus & climbing to the top of Prophet Ilias

Olympos is a village of exceptional beauty and the capital of northern Karpathos. You will pass through traditional villages, beautiful green valleys, and green cliffs until you reach the beautiful settlement on the slopes of a mountain. The houses in Olympos are built in green forests and maintain the traditional color and layout. The village itself is a living museum with an idyllic atmosphere. Today, the village has a population of 400 inhabitants, most of whom are engaged in agriculture. Olympus maintains an old-fashioned way of life where old customs play an important role. After reaching Mount Olympus you will climb to the top of Prophet Ilias at 718 meters, to admire the magnificent view of the Aegean Sea and then descend to Mount Olympus where you will have time to enjoy your lunch (if you wish) and explore the village. (depending on your choice, you can either go to Diafani via Agios Konstantinos or return to Diafani directly).

Day 3: Hike to Papa Minas Beach (circular route)

A wonderful walk up and down some gentle slopes, through pine trees, olive groves, and wheat fields to the beautiful bay of Papa Mina with its pebbly beach and shady Tamarisk trees. You will have time to enjoy swimming and snorkeling in this beautiful bay before returning to Diafani.

Day 4:Hike to Ancient Vrukunda from Avlona and then to Vanada Bay and Diafani

You will have a short transfer to Avlona, where your hike on a stone path built in antiquity descends to Ancient Vrukunda. Vrukunda is a mystical region where the ancient city-state of Vrykos once stood. You will discover ruins over 3500 years old, the church cave of St. John, and underwater treasures while snorkeling. You will then hike to the village of Avlona for a delicious home-cooked lunch (highly recommended but optional) at the area's only tavern - famous throughout Karpathos. Afterward, you will descend to Vanada on a stone path that leads easily to this wonderful bay. From there, the last part of the hike is right on the coast offering unparalleled views.

Day 5: Explore the island of Saria

In a boat, you will cross the island of Saria, where you will take a hiking tour of the island ending at Palaia beach where you will enjoy a barbecue lunch and take the boat back to Diafani. Sharia was part of Karpathos until it was detached by erosion. In ancient times, Saria was one of the four cities of Karpathos. Everywhere there are ancient monuments, and ruins of ancient settlements, while Sharia was the base of the Saracen pirates. According to mythology, the island was created when Poseidon, in a battle with the Titan Ephialtes, cut a piece from the side of Karpathos and buried himself under the opponent. Ruins of the city sink into the strait of Tristomos, between Karpathos and Saria. The signs point to the existence of the sanctuary of Apollo Porthios. There are traces of human presence from the Neolithic Age and the early Bronze Age, and from the historic period remains of fortifications have been found on the western side of Castello Hill. In addition, the island is a critical habitat and breeding ground for birds and marine organisms. Note that northern Karpathos, Saria, and the sea area around them, belong to the European network of protected areas Natura 2000, thanks to the variety of habitats available and the rare species of plants and animals they host.
